| Video Discription | (10 Jul 2020) LEAD IN: New Hollywood laws have made it illegal to be in public without a face mask. Fines up to five hundred dollars will be charged to repeat offenders. STORY-LINE: The city of West Hollywood has initiated efforts to enforce a mask mandate - with Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies authorized to issue citations for those not wearing facial coverings in public. Patrols are out in force to ensure everyone complies, whether they're county workers, local residents or business owners. Captain Edward Ramirez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says: "We made the decision collectively with the city council, with the city manager and the public safety director to step up the game a little bit and start to enforce the rules and regulations." For now, the stress is on education rather than fines, the deputies will first discuss the order and offer free masks. They'll only issuing citations if the people do not comply. "And part of that enforcement is going out into the streets and talking to folks, but utilizing education as the key, education and persuasion," says Ramirez. "We don't want to give out citations, but for people who absolutely refuse to wear a mask I can guarantee you they are going to receive a citation." Fees range from $300 for the first offense to more than $500 for a fourth violation. The fines are administrative and not criminal charges. The enforcement follows an order from California's Governor making people wear face coverings in indoor and outdoor public places statewide. Officials are closely monitoring case numbers and placing counties on a watch list if their caseloads are too high. Any county listed for three consecutive days must shutter bars and indoor operations at restaurants, movie theaters, wineries, zoos, museums, card rooms and family entertainment centers like bowling alleys and arcades. The list is growing. It already includes the largest counties in Southern California, three more were added this week and a handful of other areas are expected to be added to the localised lockdown list next week. For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.
